I have an electrical question and would appreciate your advice.

I have a Nanchang with 4 unused switches on the standard lower/horizontal switch panel.  On the left vertical side panel, I have three other switches including a switch for the alternator, a switch for the landing light and a switch for nav and strobe lights.  Is there any reason why these can't be rewired to use the unused switches below?   For example, can the alternator be wired to the old generator switch?  Can the light switches be rewired to use the other remaining unused switches?  I'm wondering if the amperage rating is wrong and that is why they are on a separate panel.

The unused switches can certainly be used for other applications. I have one assigned the task of turning off and on an electric boost pump and another is used for my strobes. I believe that these switches also have a built-in circuit breaker. Was told that this is approximately 20 amps, but have not confirmed this. It would be prudent to add an appropriate circuit breaker for each application that the switch controls.

One very simple suggestion I would throw in from my past frustrations/experiences, having refurbed much of my CJ6's wiring: label label label!It's very helpful to add small identifying labels to each wire and wire bundle for future reference, especially if it deviates from the standard PLAAF wire diagrams.

Future mechanics and avionics techs will surely thank you!

Gil / Warren,These ZKC switch breakers come in various amperage, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 40. 

Care must be taken to make sure the proper breaker amperage matches the equipment being installed.

In the Downloads section on CJ6.com, there are two electrical system files, one is a table, the other is a schematic. They are numbered pages 16 and 18. Based on the table, it appears that the missing page 17 is also a schematic. Does anybody have a page 17 they can share for the group?



Second question, is the main gyro switch sending out 28vdc to the inverter, or is it the 400hz AC power?

Second question first - Yes, 27.5 VDC from the bus via switch #9 on the main 

elec. panel.

Inverter -  28 volts DC input, 36 volts AC 400 HZ output.  The "main" gyro as you called it, operates on 36 volts AC, 400 Hz.

Here’s something interesting:   While the book shows that there are 14 switches on the CJ lower panel, my 1965 CJ has 15 switches.  My previous CJ and all the others I see only have 14. 



Next question:  when my CJ had an alternator installed (m-14p), a new switch was added to the side panel to turn it on and off rather than using the switch that used to control the generator (lower panel sw 2 is now not used).  Any reason for that?
