Al,
What I tell my passengers is, if I am unable to help, to reach forward to open the canopy using the front seat handle. If you sit in the rear seat you should find that the forward handle is reachable. Even someone who is short, such as a child, can reach it. In fact, small people can reach it easier because they can squeeze forward easier than large people. Adults should have no problem reaching the handle.
I tell them to turn the handle 90 degrees counterclockwise to release and then pull symmetrically on both sides of the canopy.
I also keep a canopy breaker tool in the cockpit for them to use in case the airplane is inverted and resting on the canopy, thus making it difficult to slide even though they can reach the handle.
As far as a secondary handle added for the rear seat, I have not heard of anyone doing that.
Regards,
Stan Sutterfield
