I am currently equipped with ADS-B meeting the 2020 US mandate. However, I do fly frequently in Canada, and am starting to thing about getting ahead of the game for that.
The currently available "diversity" solutions (which alternately ping a top and bottom-mounted antenna) are pretty expensive, and would require ditching what I have now.
So...I've been wondering if, given that I have a composite airframe, I could mount a vertical dipole, tuned for 1090 MHz in the tail cone, and have it work with both satellite and ground ADS-B stations.
I do understand that I might be cutting the power available to ping either type of station by half -- or arguably a bit better than that, since the dipole might be more efficient than a quarter-wave with a limited ground plane.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
-Lou
