My Garmin 496 and/or the battery seem to be NFG. I want to replace it since
it's the input to my autopilot. I don't want to rework the panel to install
a larger unit. Is there something else that fits that same hole? I've tried
buying replacement batteries but lots don't fit or don't work.

Albert, buy a 795.... it's a fantastic unit. Half the amout we both paid for the 496. Shouldn't need too much larger opening. Don't
buy the 796. IIRC the 795 can be mounted either horizontal or vertically.
