As additional information, I know there are newer and better gps units
available but I want to put it in the same panel hole. Since I use
ipad/foreflight to fly, VFR only and I just need an input to my autopilot.

Hi Albert, the closest consideration for you would be the aera 660. You'll
get considerable more capabilities and display size all while maintaining
the ability to drive your autopilot. It will have additional features too
that you might like, like the ability to sync the flight plan from your
tablet to the aera 660 wirelessly. Assuming you have it panel mounted using
an AirGizmo, it appears based on the specs they publish on their website
(links below) that they are the same height and width, so that should help
simplify the swap.
Full disclosure, I'm an RV-10 builder that happens to work for Garmin
GPSMAP 496 product size = 5.7"W x 3.2"H x 1.9"D (14.5 x 8.1 x 4.8 cm)
aera 660 product size = 5.5”W x 3.4”H x .8”D (14.1 x 8.7x 2.1 cm)
