|
|
I am not sure if there was a hose suppled with my Rotax 912S to connect between the expansion tank and the (Rotax-supplied) overflow bottle, nor can I find anything of that nature in my inventory of parts supplied by Europa Aircraft. Before I spend a lot of time looking for something which may be non-existent, can anyone confirm whether such a hose is supplied by Rotax with the engine, or if Europa supply it?
Supplementary question - if I have to procure that hose, can anyone suggest a suitable type available in UK? The Rotax manual specifies:
Hose connecting expansion tank to overflow bottle must be rated for vacuum/suction for min. 125 °C (257 °F). E.g. it must be strong enough to withstand high heat and suction during the cooling down period. WARNING: A soft walled hose is not suitable as it can collapse and cause coolant system failure.
Size . . . of connections: expansion tank to overflow bottle outside dia. 8 mm (3/8”).
Any thoughts welcome!

I have seen a lot of people use 6mm fuel hose which is in the kit but wondered if steam hose, silicon, would be suitable.

Alan - thanks for the suggestions.
I had considered silicon tubing but discarded the idea as most of the examples I’ve handled seem to collapse rather easily under vacuum. I imagine “steam hose” expects to have positive pressure inside all the time!
I certainly have plenty of 6mm (and indeed 8mm) fuel hose lying around spare because I have used a combination of solid aluminium pipe and SS braided hose for my fuel system. I’ll see how much of a push it takes to get the 6mm fuel hose onto the 8mm expansion tank outlet.

Hello Rowland,
I am at a loss to know what would cause suction in the overflow hose.
Presumably you know there were instructions years ago to increase the size of the hole in the lid of the overflow bottle. If that hole is clear, I don’t see how there could ever be pressure or suction in the
overflow hose.
I am using a piece of clear plastic tubing and not having any problems but if I could find a better quality clear tubing, I would use it.
Regards
Kingsley in Oz.

I believe the only suction would be that required to pull the fluid from the overflow bottle back into the cap-tank during cool-down. If the tank is close to the same level, the suction would be trivial if it could be measured at all.
Cheers,
Pete

I was assuming that the suction occurs when the coolant cools and contracts.... but presumably that would not occurr in the air...?
I use a piece of fuel hose.

Try a piece of fuel hose,14” or 5/16”, witch ever fits best.
