912 oil return line in silicon

Hello,

I am replacing the hoses on my 912 and I am thinking of using silicon hose for the oil return line. This is probably the hose that is the most affected by heat as just above the exhaust system. It works in a low over pressure environment of around 0,35 bar yet I have never seen a silicon tube used on this line. On the other hand the oil pump feed line (used in an under pressure environment) is often made of silicon.

Is there a reason for not using a silicon return line as the rubber ones harden due to heat?

What is the manufacturer's recommendation?  IF they say it's okay, you're good to go.  I've only used the blue silicone hose on coolant lines and the stuff, though pricey, is amazing.  After 15 years on a 582 install (with a lot of outside time) it's still as supple as new.  Over time it pays off in replacement costs and time spent.  For your application I would recommend you run fire sleeve over it though.Best of luck and safe flying,

The Rotax Installation Manual lays out the required specs on oil hoses. As far as heat, silicone is usually better than rubber ((at)500F vs (at)375F). Another spec is resistance to vacuum (hose collapse). I don't remember what else is discussed. Check the Installation Manual against the specs of the hose you are considering.
