I respect Mark’s point of view after his years of maintaining Grumman systems!
For anyone else contemplating pulling good systems to put in “glass”, please carefully put your old stuff on the shelf, I may need it someday. I still check to see the small circles go by on the attitude gyro every flight.

EA-6B ICAP II ASN(?)-130 INS was advertised to us as an improvement over -50 (not INS) but we flew off the boat using -50 for attitude source because -130 wouldn’t always throw an “off flag” when it dropped offline, not good off night cat. On Forrestal class Cat 3 was shortest/hardest shot and often dumped -130 INS capability, so we asked Boss to avoid sending us to Cat 3...guess which one we got after that? (and stop calling me Francis). ADI ball was a work of art (but I didn’t have to maintain it/or its sources). Never did like the EFIS they replaced it with to get civilian ILS...at +/-90 the 2D display would flip flop to reorient with heading...adding another layer of confusion when (per NATOPS) you were relying on that for post stall recovery.
Guess that’s part of why I don’t like all the needless color on current generation of glass displays...rather have monochrome for a parameter unless there’s something wrong, then turn it red. Most of them look like someone puked crayola all over the display even during normal ops...
..and if pain in the tail was the only criteria, I would have been booted from the house years ago!
Cheers, Rich
