Hi Everyone,
Just a quick intro as my first post. I'm very happy to see such a rich history of information and wisdom shared here. It's great to have a forum that is still active in these days of Facebook.
I’m finally getting to the point where I can indulge in my life-long passion for aviation. I'm currently searching for Firefly or Firestar as it will be the best fit for me right now considering a whole bunch of factors. I have a line on two aircraft here near Colorado which seem like good options and I will be seeing both soon, but if anyone knows of a flying aircraft or project in the states surrounding Colorado, I'd love to know about it.
My background is ex-military (Australian Navy weapons engineer), motorsport fabricator and competitor, and software engineer. I like to build things.
My aviation experience so far has been pretty limited. I flew hang gliders in my 20’s and more recently I’ve started training in gliders and I’ve done a few hours of powered lessons. I’m an EAA member and my 12-year old daughter is almost as enthusiastic about aircraft as I am. I want to start under Part 103 as owning an aircraft as a non-permanent resident in the US is a bit of a pain. My subsequent plans are to restore a vintage aircraft (probably a Taylorcraft) and then start building aircraft.
I’m currently living in Colorado. I know that there aren’t many ultralights up here because of the high DA, but if there are any other Kolb-ers out here in Colorado, or surrounds, I’d love to make a connection.
Cheers for now.
Glenn

Welcome the the List. If you want a Kolb 103, the only current one that qualifies is the Firefly. The original Firestar with a 5 rib wing and a 377 qualifies, as does the Ultrastar. Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but I think that's all of the 103's.
Other people will check in throughout the day, so keep an eye on your e-mail.

Thanks Bill,
I appreciate your warm welcome and your advice. I'm keen to engage further and will keep an eye out for responses.
I understand the implications of considering a Firestar. I am still interested in them due to my impression that the extra wing would be beneficial up here in CO.
Cheers
Glenn

Our modification of an original Firestar into a Firefly (Original Firestar wings, Firefly fuselage) met Part 103 with a 277, now we are using a 377, and have chosen not to go back and weigh it - it would be really close but - who knows? (Don't ask - don't tell?)
However, it still has all the original Stits from the 1980's that was painted with automotive paint as a top coat. If we tore all the original fabric off and redid it with Oracote I am sure it would make weight.
