Vic Syracuse has an article in this months Sport Aviation (June 2020) that deals with Batteries and Alternators.
he says not to mistreat a battery by constantly leaving it on a non approved battery tender/charger between flight.
Help me understand what an "approved charger" or what to avoid. Specific products will be good. May I assume maybe there are different chargers for different battery types?

What Vic is referring to are 'battery maintainers' . . . which may
also be a charger but with automatic step-down to a maintenace mode
when the battery is topped off.
If the advertising literature for the charger includes the
word 'maintainer' then it's good to go. Brands like Battery
Minder, Battery Tender and Schumacher are several choices
to consider.
A battery maintainer holds the voltage on a stored battery
at JUST ABOVE it's normal resting point. This means that
very small, self discharge currents flowing INSIDE the
battery will be supported from OUTSIDE instead of from
the battery's own resources. It cannot even charge, much
less overcharge a battery.

Not really . . . there are some so-called, 'smart
chargers' with front panel controls suggesting
different charging modes for AGM, flooded and GEL
batteries . . . but I've never been able to detect
any useful differences in their charging protocols.
If the battery is suited to run in a vehicle, then
any charger suited to charge vehicle batteries
is okay. CHARGING is not the critical feature . . .
its what the charge does AFTER charging is complete
so that overcharging damage does not occur and
self-discharge currents are mitigated.
