Guys: It is no problem to remove the fuel tang sender with the wing
attached. I would recommend replacing the rubber gasket with a cork or
similar gasket when replacing the sender as the original rubber gaskets
squash out with time and leak. Use a pager punch to make the screw
holes in the new gasket. Do not seal with silicone as it is not gas
proof. Use the gray colored 2-part tank sealer recommended by Vans if
you want extra sealer. Doc Ser #s 41862 and 41087

I used a Viton gasket and sealing screws with Viton orings from McMaster (link below), without any tank sealant. That was in 2014. Both senders have been leak free since then. It’s more serviceable this way if something goes wrong with the sender.

I used the rubber gasket with no sealant for almost 10 years. I put some fuel lube on the gasket and never had leaks. I changed to the Viton gasket and sealing screws with viton o-rings after reading Lenny's post about that a few years ago. Works great and still no leaks. I have had to change senders a couple of times over the years and it is not a difficult job. You have to be delicate when tightening the screws. If you really torque down on them, you might cause leaks.

Did you make the big viton gasket from a sheet?

I used these gaskets

Viton Fluoroelastomer Flange Gasket, Ring, Black, Fits Class 150 Flange, 1/8" Thick, 1" Pipe Size, 1-5/16" ID, 2-5/8" OD (Pack of 1)
and just punched holes in them with a leather punch tool like this:
