Has anybody addressed the holes and wear and tear in their wheel well? If so what did you do and use? My CJ is almost out of the paint shop and the painter wants to paint the wheel well. I would like to get the wheel well back to original condition. Thanks in advance.

Rich

You can reach out to Craig Payne, he has a kit to replace all of the fabric covers with aluminum removable inspection panels.  He has them for the MLG and NLG areas of the aircraft.
He is here on the yak list and also has an add on Barnstormers with his CJ and Yak mods.

I do make sheet metal hole covers for the CJ. However if you must have original, then make fabric patches with pinked edges. Glue them in just like doing a control surface patch, shrink until taut and then dope over the top before painting. That's how the Chinese did it.

Rich, I cut the fabric out of those on my CJ years ago. I used some old aviation aluminum that came off an old Cessna wing; measured and cut round plates to fit back over the holes using tinnerman clips and screws to hold in place. Painted them a flat gray to sort of match the color in the wheel well. They have never come loose or fallen off in the breezy wheel well.

This is what Craig Payne’s painted wheel well covers look like when installed. They fit perfectly.
