Chip detectors a series of metal discs space closely together. With a metal chip comes along it bridges to discs. The disks are alternating one connecting to ground the other one connecting to the lead at the front which connects to a lightbulb industrial battery. When a metal chip appears it shorts between the two discs and makes the ground connection and turns on the light.

That is correct, only a light bulb connected to the chip detector screen. Very simple, but effective mechanism.

Mr Coy
Do you have a photo of the chip detector assembly?

I'll add to this just slightly. If you are putting this design in a Moose, you come off a circuit breaker with voltage which connects to one side of the bulb. The other side of the bulb runs a single wire to the chip detector. When the detector provides a ground, the bulb comes on. Will work with a 12 or 24 VDC system.
