The solder sleeve splice has earned a well
deserved place in the wireman's bag of tricks.
I have several sizes/types on hand. But
they can be a bit tricky because of the
variables at the molecular scale for materials
used to fabricate them.
No big deal for the outer jacket of
heat shrink. Same-o, same-o for the
ring of sealant at each end. The solder
can be problematic: 63/37 solder with
an active flux? Even with the best of
solders, securing good flow to the wire
strands can be impeded by corrosion of
the finish on the wire.
I have some 40 year old 22759 that does
not assemble well with solder sleeves. Contrary
to popular myth, that Tefzel is NOT impervious
to the ingress of chemistry that is antagonistic
to the tin finish on wires.
Now, that same wire is just fine crimped into
a PIDG . . . or pre-tinned with the aforementioned
Hi-Q solder. But it's not an automatic
sho-in even if the splice is made by one of the big name
manufacturers.
Unless you already know otherwise, TEST your
wire/solder-sleeve combination on the bench
to prop up your personal confidence that
the quality of the joint will be satisfactory.
We can probably never know the physical
makeup of the Pacific Rim clones to a Raychem
or TE Connectivity S/S. No doubt many if not
most are satisfactory . . . but do test to find out.
Dr. Dee and I are off on an all day road trip
to Dallas to pick up a car tomorrow. Had a $1 part
break and cripple the engine in our family
chariot. Found a ready replacement at a great
price . . . just not handy to our neighborhood.
Will keep our transportation needs covered
while I sort out options. Will be off line
until Sunday.
