I seem to remember that there was a problem getting Sky-tec starters and alternators rebuilt. I chose the B&C starter and alternators because I know that they will always rebuild whatever they have built.

anyone using the Vans starter (Sky-tec 149-12XLT) on your 540? The vendors seem to tout the XLT version over the LS version which came with my 540?

Vans for whatever reason has stopped offering a proper starter for 6 cylinder Lycomings. The LS and XLT are for 4 cylinder engines and should not be used on a 6 cylinder. The correct starter in the Skytec brand is the 149-12-NL, which for whatever reason can be bought for $25-50 bucks less. Quote: | Sent from my TRS-80 Model 100 |

When Skytec was its own company, they did overhauls themselves, with good service. Never had a problem with a starter they rebuilt.
I guess Hartzell doesn't want to be in the rebuild business. It would seem any electric shop could reverse engineer it and apply for a PMA approval.
It isn't like there is any exotic technology. Incredible how Hartzell raised the prices by about $150 for Skytec units, and $300 for the Kelly Electric design starters.

I agree with you. Hartzell just wants to milk every dollar out of the Skytec brand that they can before they destroy it. I hope B&C is never sold.
