Good evening

Can anybody shed some light on why my XS Tri-gear pulls to the left
whilst taxiing?

I have jacked the undercarrige up on each side today to see if the
brakes were binding, they seem to be free and both wheels seem to have
the same amount of friction when turned by hand.

Thanks
Arwel

Arwel,

There are a number of reasons for slight tracking issues on hard pavement.
  1. Air pressure in the tires is different. Low tires drag but if all is even, if weight on the one tire is heavier the aircraft will curve that direction.
  2. Pilot only in the port side is a left turn. Increase left tire pressure to compensate. The heavy pilot on the port side bends the gear a bit and throws the track out pulling to the left. It’s natural but if all is operational, simply read on.
  3. Friction plate not even or worn. On install or maintenance use a scale to check if the nose gear fork moves from center, left and right equally. Check the breakout force for when the gear moves. Move the gear 10 degress right. Simply pull the scale in the direction to re-center. The do it from the left. You may find your nose gear sticks slightly off center and prefers to be off center. Some use a sticky grease to reduce the breakout force.
  4. Nose gear fork spindle is offset or leaning. Tends to hang up the nice smooth centering of the nose tire.
  5. Main gear leg bent or slightly off track. The main gear may throw one wheel toe out. You can on next annual jack the plane off its gear and check the spindle for toe in/out as well as the relative position of each gear to each other. This is very difficult to adjust in the Europa. If the gear leg is loose, see my article rough draft attached on correcting the loose main gear bolt hole.
  6. Draggy brake, or improperly torqued bearing. See my Matco bearing article Properly torqueing your wheel bearings on the Custom Flight Creations website... A bearing that is too loose is as bad as one that is over torqued. If your brakes are rattling due to poor sliding pin and or caliper support bushings the brake can bind for a second. If slight finger pressure stops the rattle and the plane tracks it is your problem.

These are solutions that also apply to older RV trigear series aircraft, Grumman AA series and other castering nose wheel aircraft. Just without the fiberglass.

Best Regards,

Bud Yerly
