CJ-6 flap issue

Hi all,One of the CJ's we look after has an annoying trait in that when the aircraft has been sitting for a while and the air has bled off out of the system the flaps come down.

As soon as air pressure is restored the flaps come back up. They function normally and we cannot work out why it is doing it.

Have had flap actuator apart as part of routine inspections with no issues noted, both diverter valves apart (again no issues and they appear to be installed with correct orientation).

Any thoughts?

Jay,

What happens if you  put both flap handles in the neutral position when you leave the  airplane and let it set for a period of time?  Do the flaps drop down?

You  may have a main air valve leaking or the B nuts at the main air valve  or at the main air tank leaking.  Pay particular attention to the flares  on the tubing under the B nuts because they are prone to cracking because of  over-tightening.  Use the soapy water spray test on the fittings to see  if there are any leaks.  The main air valve may be suspect as well.

Have you rebuilt the check valves on the firewall?

In your post you said the diverter valves and the flap actuator were taken apart and inspected with no issues noted.  But have you actually overhauled them?  Although you may not see anything defective during a disassembly, like for example the internal seals, they could easily be worn and allowing air to bleed past them.   How long ago were the diverter valves and the flap actuator overhauled with new internal components?

Dennis has good suggestions.   I would ask, how far down does the flap travel.  If it is dropping down more than 1/2 inch check your flap bungee.   I had to replace mine, it looked fine, but on a very close inspection I found many of the strands of rubber broken in several places.   Hope this helps.   I know that Doug stocks the parts.

Isn't the bungee cord supposed to keep the flap up when air is depleted? Just a thought

There should be a bungee cord that would hold the flap up.

I'm late to this party, but I had this problem for a year, and finally just replaced the bungee - problem sorted...
