During my run up to fly to meet the family for thanksgiving the left magneto was completely dead. Back to the chicks to troubleshoot where I removed the P leads in case they had grounded somehow with no effect. I spoke with 3 mechanics and all had no ideas other than replace the mag.
I’ve read some sporadic news about P Mags and maybe other hybrid magnetos on the market. I don’t want to go pure electronic ignition due to other battery source issues, but does anyone have any recommendations that would be a step up from a pure magneto?

Marcus,
The easiest swap is the Surefly. Keep the same plugs, harness and magneto cap, and just swap in the Surefly for the mag, then install a power wire and that’s it. If it ever breaks while on a trip you can always swap in a standard mag.
There’s only one minor issue with it, most current EFIS systems can't read the RPM from the P-lead of the SureFly. Using a hall effect sensor in the other mag takes care of that though.

Sheesh, I don't know how you pass the A&P practical if you can't do basic trouble shooting on a mag.
If it won't fire with P lead disc, the problem is inside the mag, It could be worn out points, bad condensor, damaged rotor.
A bad rotor will be pretty obvious from where it the contact is made at each plug wire. Yes, it requires taking off the main rotor cap.
Slick mags have easy to get tools to verify e-gap setting.

On the G3X it doesn’t read my mag anyway as it has different pulses than my electronic ignition so that’s not really an issue.
In the mechanic’s defense I only posed the question over the phone on first things to look for that might be an easy fix. They were happy to dig into it in the shop but we needed to head out of town.

And I believe it requires a magneto with an impulse coupling on the other side. Correct?

Standard setup is with impulse coupling on pilot's side. However, even
if the coupling had failed, it should still fire, early.

Yes, I’ll be needing a magneto with an impulse coupling or a setup that will do the same job of providing a spark at low rpm.

If you do go Surefly you won't need the impulse coupler, and it fits in
the same drive that the impulse coupled mag does on the left side.
I just put one on a few months ago. It's working well so far.
I have lightspeed on the Right still, so it's dual electronic, which
you already said you didn't want to do, but, the engine does start
very nicely with the setup, and no worry about impulse coupler
failures.

SureFly sounds like a good option but I now understand it too requires a power supply. I like the simplicity of a magneto as my backup ignition given one electronic ignition provides about 95% of the benefit compared to dual electronic ignitions and no backup battery required. I’m now leaning toward reverting to a Slick mag again as it appears the E mag is 4 cylinder only from what I can see.

Having a magneto firing early during starting is very bad for the starter. Even at starter speeds a magneto can generate a weak spark and cause kickback. That’s why the right magneto is grounded out while the starter is engaged when the engine is equipped with either a conventional magneto with an impulse coupler and an non impulse coupled magneto or the Bendix Shower of sparks system.
I had Bendix Magnetos on my RV10 when I started flying last February. I did not use a conventional switch, just guarded on/off switches for the P leads. As a result I only turned on the left mag for starting to avoid kickback. I turned the right one on after it was running. When the EMags came out for the 6 Cylinder engines I installed one on the right so I could start on both ignition systems. After 50 hours I installed one on the left as well. Starts are easy and the engine still runs great at 18,000 DA. 175 knots TAS on 12 gal/hr. I might get around to flying if higher to see what happens to performance post COVID when I can travel more easily.

I also have switches for both ignitions. My engine from it's origin was equiped with dual lightspeed ignitions. Especially with the 3 blade MT I always hit the starter button PRIOR to flipping the ignition switches. I think this is a good idea for all. Let the blades get going and then turn on the ignition. No kickback ever.
