Engine roughness at low power, 82% RPM?

One of the M14Ps I fly seems to be rougher (not quite a popping sound but different than usual and has added vibration) close to landing. 82%, low throttle (very first notch on the Russian manifold pressure gauge or so). Both have MTV9 props which tend to prop brake during these conditions but the other engine is fairly smooth in comparison. It does have less than 200 hours on the engine whereas this one is about 620.



Any ideas?

Check fir intake leaks. Especially if it has an intake drain kit. Also check all intake gland nuts.

Also check the condition of the manifold pressure hose and primer hose.

One more thing - is there an easy way to determine which intake tube might be the culprit? Or might as well do the gaskets on all?

The only way I know is to spray the suspected area with propane or carb cleaner with the engine running. But carb cleaner is flammable. Best to troubleshoot this when the engine is cold. So if you use carb cleaner be very careful.  What youâ€™re looking for is the engine RPM to increase if there is a leak wherever you spay.

You could use a propane torch but donâ€™t lite the torch. Just use it like a sniffer and just wave the propane gas around the joints I will do the same thing with a lot less danger.

Not yet. I am hoping to replace the intake gaskets/seals within the next 10 days.

This is beyond cool, but with the cowling off and engine running (prop blast) do you have to run the "plumbers" torch at full bore to get a rise?
