I just finished the Tail kit for an RV-12iS, my number is 121296. I am thinking of using vinyl wrap instead of paint. Today, I saw a youtube video of N915DG being wrapped. I looked up the "N" number and found the plane listed to Richard. I was hoping that he was on this list.
My question to him and in fact the whole list, have any of you vinyl wrapped your planes and are you happy with the results.
Any pitfalls, hints etc.
I am a little worried of what would happen if the vinyl might come loose on a flight control surface.
I have completed the tail kit but have not assembled the pieces as I am thinking about wrapped the plane and thought it would be easier as separate parts than a completed plane. I am stalled now as Van's is behind, I understand they had to close for several weeks due to forest fires, so my next kit won't arrive until after the New Year. So I have time to work this out.
From 1996 to 2001, I built a Harmon Rocket II. It is a RV-4 which was modified to accept a IO-540 engine using a Kit from John Harmon. (The joke is that the kits back then were just boxes of dirt and we had to make our own aluminum.) I have enjoyed the Rocket a lot. I am over 70 years old and while I am still flying the Rocket, father time is taking a toil. Having the greatest wife ever, followed me for twenty years while I flew the F-4G Wild Weasel, then allowed the building of the Rocket and now the building of an RV-12iS ELSA version.
I have a retired A&P friend and we finished the tail kit in three weeks. If Van's can ever get me the other kits, I hope to be flying by the end of next summer. These matched drill parts go together so much better that the old Van's kits before CNC machines. Of course, four hands and two brains help too. We have worked about 4 to 6 hours, 6 days a week.
Anyway, I am at Apple Valley Airport in California, KAPV. Stop by and say hello at Hangar 360 #7. There is even a chance for a Rocket ride (I fly in the early morning to avoid the high temperatures and high winds of the desert).
