I sent this to the Sport Aviation editor today.
Vic Syracuse did a good job on care and feeding of tires and brakes in the Feb 2021 issue, but please allow me to add my top tips. Change tires and tubes in a clean area of your hangar, so grit and metal chips won’t get trapped between tire carcass and tube. Baby powder contains oils that will attack your tubes, EC880 silicone powder is a better choice. Reinstall valve cap after inflating, so grit doesn’t get into valve causing leaks. New molded seals 154-13000 are superior to oiled felt washers used on common 5” wheels in keeping grit out of bearings. Upgrade Nitrile caliper piston O-rings to Viton or Fluorosilicone for high temperature resistance to compression set. Modern wheel weights are no longer Lead, they are Steel or Zinc. MIL-H-5606 fluid has been superseded by fully compatible far less flammable MIL-PRF-87257 fluid. Mobil SHC100 is the Parker Hannifin preferred bearing grease. Use high temperature ceramic grease on anchor pins going into torque plate.
