In the firewall of my Avid Flyer there is a perforation. Does anyone
know how I can patch it up? Thanks.

George -
How big is the hole?
If it is a small hole, fill it with a bolt, washers and nut. Larger holes may be patched with a bolt and two (2) AN970 large area washers, one on either side of the firewall. If it is too big to cover with washers, consider a patch of stainless or galvanized steel, matched to the thickness of your firewall material, secured with screws & nuts and a fire-rated caulk sealant.

Neal's method is quickest & simplest. I had a couple of -4 holes intended to mount a fuel pump, & wanted something a bit lighter, so I used stainless sheet I cut from a really cheap cooking pot bought at Walmart (discount retailer here in the US). The gray stuff is intumescent caulk, but 'proseal' or regular silicone would work fine & proseal is what Van's Aircraft recommends for sealing the firewall. Yes, the aluminum rivets will melt, but the entire firewall is riveted with aluminum rivets.

Neal,
Thank you for your reply. I think that I will need a sheetmetal patch to
cover this hole.

Charlie,
Thank you for your reply and the photo which illustrates this. You always provide me with useful information. Thanks for your replies. I am familiar with Walmart. This company used to have a presence in Germany. Is the cooking pot which you purchased at Walmart made out of aluminium or steel?

Stainless. In the US, they're often called 'stock pots'. Here's a link to the one I'm pretty sure I bought. At 0.013" thick, it's really thin material; about the same thickness as the stainless firewall material in my RV7 project.I've actually bought a couple of them for various purposes. Scraps can be used to make 'chip chasers'. I had problems with the RV6 aluminum wheel pant brackets cracking, and rather than buying new brackets, I formed 'doublers' using stainless cut from one of these pots; no further cracking. I made a large heat shield to protect my rotary engine intake from the exhaust manifold (they're only a few inches apart). And the firewall patches, of course.
Just find the cheapest *stainless* cooking pot available, and cut it up with an abrasive wheel in a die grinder. Be careful with the pieces, though. Until you dress the edges, they are extremely sharp. If you've never worked with stainless, be aware that it will be pretty hard on your tools. Not a big deal with abrasive wheels, but drill bits will suffer, and cutting it with a regular saw will likely destroy the saw blade along with the thin stainless.
Good luck!
