Is there an after market maker of improved speed wheel pants for the RV
10? It would seem to me that a less bulky wheel pant would offer less
drag and the Vans kit wheel pants certainly don't have to be as wide as
they are to clear the tires. Doc N123CV & N784DC

Ken Krueger sells carbon main gear pants for RV-8s with 6.00-6 wheels, which is the same wheel the -10 uses. I saw them at OSH, beautiful composite work.
Smaller cross section than the Van’s pants and better looking than the James ones. Less drag? Maybe...

The discs get very hot. The narrower you make the pants, the closer you have fiberglass/carbon next to the disk./Martin

Lew Gallagher: Hey Doc. Good suggestions here, take your pick. But here's a thought. A while back an owner of a RV-10 and a RV-3 had me modify Van's pants for a RV-8 to replace his skinny pants on the RV-3 ... and it is a hot rod! He had researched it and decided the tear shaped "fat" ones were more aerodynamic/slicker than the skinny ones. And when I had them on, they also looked very cool! I would suggest you contact Van's before you go with skinnier pants to see if they've done the research. Later, - Lew

The RV-10 uses pressure recovery wheel pants. Faster than smaller ones. (You can look it up on vansairforce.net)

Fluid dynamics is a tough science. Who would have guessed that a ‘bulbous bow’ makes a ship go faster? Or that ‘fat’ wheel pants cut drag more than ‘skinny’ ones? Vans’ pants really do work.
