Yeah, that was sort-of-the-way you could
protect the switch's opening contacts with
a device that clamped the arc-energy to a
dozen or so volts . . . but again, fuzzy
thinking based on poor understanding of
the MOV's physics.

So yeah, spike suppression belongs across
the inductive source . . . not across any
switch to be protected. If the MOV had been
a bit more sophisticated, mounting it across
the switch was more convenient from the
installer's perspective but that bubble
popped and blew away.

The schematic citing a switch mounted
MOV was one of mine.
