One Side of Headset Dead, Why?

I recently switched the shielded 3 wires from a mini music jack to an Aera 660 to provide audio alerts through a GTR200. The three wires connect to pins 18 (music R), 19 (music L), and 37 (music Lo) on the GTR200 and to the respective white (audio R), brown (audio L), and green (audio common) wires of the Aera bare wire cable. The mini jack is removed entirely. Now only one speaker in the headphone works. It's the same for the pilot and co-pilot jacks, and with two different headsets. Does the Aera need to go through an aux input on the GTR to keep both sides of the headset working? Thanks, John

Try using an audio isolator transformer, $9 at Amazon.

Troubleshoot. Simple stuff first; open the connections between the devices, one at a time, until both sides work again. Then start adding things and testing. My bet is that one channel's signal wire got swapped with the ground.

Unless you're saying that one side in the headsets is dead in all modes (comm & intercom reception in addition to the alert signal). If that's the case, my money would be on something external to the 3 wires that were changed, got messed up during the dive under the panel.

A problem on the music input should not (emphasis on 'should') affect output except for whatever is feeding the music input.

Further troubleshooting is leading me to believe in a coincidental failure of the radio. I disconnected the Aera from the radio harness and still no joy on the right side speaker for both pilot and co-pilot. I then did a unit ground check per the installation manual. The headset check was showing no shorts, produced a tone on both pilot and co-pilot left side, but no tone on either right side. I also re-checked the connector at the back of the radio itself and all connections appear proper and secure. I recall having occasional headset reception issues in the past, but haven't been able to fly since last May (long annual in progress). Are there any other checks before pulling and repairing/replacing the radio? John

There is a discussion right now on Vansairforce about the GTR 200 and headsets.

Maybe someone there can advise you.

One thing I ran into decades ago with a different brand comm was that one of the D-sub pins backed out of the shell *just enough* to not make connection between the tray's connector and the radio itself. (In my case, it was the PTT line, but it can happen with any of the pins.)

An 'out of left field' thought would be to check the programming of the radio itself, if it has 'software' configurations. Some radios have config adjustments that are done in setup mode for things like mic gain, etc. If there's a balance setting (L<>R) that somehow got tweaked....

Just for grins I decided to test my two stereo headsets. Both of them did not test on the right (ring portion of jack) speaker. I borrowed another stereo headset and eureka, both speakers worked, and the left/right tone test was correct as well.

Now, any tips on overhauling headsets?

John
