I am glad you are happy with the results Area 51! I agree, the increased power is appreciable especially getting through the “am I flying or still on the ground” phase which can be less than confidence inspiring sometimes, not to mention the increase in cruise speed.
I hope you calculated the extra drag that opening the lower cowling had on the aerodynamics prior to that ? 😉

Check flights today on the 100hp 912ULS Classic install... Nothing short of a total
success...
First flights this morning and with my innate skepticism was expecting the entire
unit to go "BANG!!!"; but it did not... instead it purred this way, and then
it purred that way for about 30 minutes... then i brought it in a little clumsily
due to the need to relearn new alternate engine speeds... a good visual
scrutiny revealed not one thing requiring attention; so a cup of tea was created
and consumed before going up again for an hour, and it certainly got up off
the deck and climbed straight through the normal 80hp flat moment of excess undercarriage
flaps drag; the aircraft actually just got out in front of me to
the point i was saying "i better retract the undercarriage now before i hit 80kt;
like right now!"... Take offs are a bit more exciting at the moment as i get
accustomed to the new amount of swing as the tail gets up, or blipping of the
throttle on rounding out.
This has been a direct swap, retaining 80hp starter motor, exhaust, cooling...
the only change has been raising the lower lip of the bottom cowl 1" away from
the fuselage. Running temps at cruise so far are 90C/100C, and 80/80 on approach
decent... The prop needs repitching due to ratio changes of the 100hp reduction
drive.
181 will never be having an 80hp unit reinstalled... more flying tomorrow...
