Hello Everyone,
I have a favor to ask. I am in the process of riveting the top skins on my
left wing. I was wondering if someone would consider helping me backriveting
and bucking the wing skin? My good friend who has been helping me has a
really tight schedule and has trouble getting free time to come over. I
tried teaching my 11 year son, but while he is a master at the rivet gun
now, the bucking bar is just too tough for him.
It's been 3 weeks now since I started the skin and I would really like to
get it finished. If you live in the Plano, TX area, please email me at
smitty(at)smittysrv.com
Thanks so much!

I don't live anywhere near you so I can't physically help. However,
there are at least two alternatives to getting someone else to help you.
1. Do it all by yourself. I did so and I know of others who also did
so. There are really only a handful of rivets that are at all hard to
do by yourself - and if you have long arms even they are not hard.
2. Have your son man the rivet gun, especially if he is a master at it
as you say. It is actually easier for you to man the bucking bar and
have someone else man the rivet gun rather than vice-versa. As long as
someone holds the rivet gun securely, the bucking bar end is more
critical anyway.

Hi
I just finished 2 weeks ago riveting the top skin on my L wing. My girlfriend handled the back rivet gun while I held the 5-lb bucking bar from "The Yard" tight to the skin. The narrow end was best. When she was not able to hold the bar tight enough to the skin this resulted in a few high headed rivets I drilled out and replaced.
I riveted a few by myself and this resulted in bucking bar rebound dents. The next time I attempt this my myself I am forewarned and will handled the bar with more care.
Good luck.

I agree with Richard.
I had help on about 1/2 the bottom skins on the 1st wing. I did the rest
myself & then realized that I could do the entire bottom alone on the
2nd. I found it helpful to shim the side of the bucking bar using
cardboard or rubber sheet so the flanges of the lightening holes didn't
cause the bar to tip. About 3/8" wide, thickness of the flange offset &
the length of the bar on the side that touches the rib. That way I could
just push the bar against the rib to assist in stabilizing it when I had
an awkward 'reach'.
Good luck,
Charlie
