Below is a copy of an email sent to a list reader & Kolb flyer. Those of you
wanting to spend more time flying than overhauling may want to read it. Does
anyone know of anybody else running these motors past 1,000 hours? What's
the max anyone has ever heard of running them? I plan to take this 503 past
2,000 hours or until it quits.

What is the secret of keeping the 503 running for 1000+ hours?

Mark...some people don't even believe me when I tell them that I've gotten &
still get well over 1,000 hours on the Rotax 503 and 582. I can't believe
Rotax recommends an overhaul every 300 hours. It's a terrible waste of money &
time that could be spent flying. I think they do that from a mostly legal
standpoint Their lawyers probably demand it to lessen the possible liability
litigation from pilot error crashes etc.

Anyway, on both engines that I've taken past 1,000 hours, the 503 & 582, had
two things in common: A clutch and using Pennzoil 2-cycle (NON-synthetic)
oil. The clutch keeps that drastic, terrible & detrimental rattling sound
coming from your motor at low rpms in starting, taxi, landing etc. That's got to
play havoc on your crank...crankcase that is! LOL!

I could add a 3rd. item...the fact that I'm not afraid to run the pee out of
the motors. As I said in the post, easily 50% of the 1,200+ hours that I have
on the 503 right now were and are being run at wide open throttle. That's
6,500 rpm on a 3-blade Warp Drive prop pulling hang gliders here in north
Florida on my 503/Clutch/Pennzoil equipped Trike. That's wide open from takeoff to
20 minutes to tow release at 3,000 feet.

A final item: I was using Amoco Premium about 90% of the time but since the
station changed to BP I've had to use BP's Premium & so far...no difference.

Hope that helps but you're the final authority of running your motor!

Been a while since I have flown two strokes, but I always used the throttle to prevent gear box rattle. 2,000 rpm idle takes care of that problem.

Yes, used the same procedure in the days prior to brakes.
