Hi Gang:
Someone was asking about increasing fuel capacity in their original
FS. Here is how Brother Jim and I did it on my FS in 1988, an 18 gal
5052 Aluminum .050 wall tank, mounted in the upper rear behind the
bulkhead, opening up a cargo compartment below. Similar configuration
as my MKIII.

I picked up a 10 gal. Titan tank that I'm going to try this weekend... I think I'll eventually try to copy yours... If you have any more pictures of that installation, I'd appreciate seeing them...

Morning Gang:
Those interested, if there are more photos of the original FS 18 gal
aluminum fuel tank, I will be glad to post them.
This tank was baffled internally, pulled fuel from the bottom rear,
lowest point of tank, through a finger strainer. Fueled from the rear
through an inlet made up of pvc and brass plumbing parts.
This tank worked great in all areas except a small leak in the bottom
rear that was not detected until after installation. This tank was
not sloshed. Had we sloshed it, like we did the 25 gal aluminum tank
in my mkIII, we probably would not have had any leakage problems.
Soon as I get a chance I will dig through old photos and see what I
can find.

Here are some pictures of my attempt at the John/Jim Hauck fuel tank design for a Mark III. Originally I calculated 20.5 gallons. In the leak and flow test I did just before covering put 21.5 gallons in it. I worked out a size that I would only have to remove one tube to install or remove. John H's tank is a bit bigger and I think he has two tubes that he removes.
Both Jim and John talked me it through it.
One difference is my tank is .063". Couldn't get .050" around here. It was right after Katrina and supply/selection was pretty limited. This tank weighs 10 pounds less than my old one that only carried 12.7 gallons. Should have done it right the first time.
Take it from someone who knows, if you are thinking of making long X-countries then you need at least a one hour reserve. Our planes fly at a speed that just a little bit of weather at the end of a flight can put you in a bad way. I learned the hard way. The FAR 30 minute reserve is not enough for planes that like to fly slow.
John H has all the experience with this. These pictures are my humble attempt to gain from that experience. If John H has trouble finding his old pictures and you need more details let me know. I have more handy. John H did this so long ago that once he finds them he may have to take them and have them restored  !
I have been fighting the two W's (Work and Weather) to get this painting finished. Ready for final color coats. Just happens to be foul weather on my off days for the last month. Also had few chores in there.
Anxious to fly it.

John B, looks very nice. I like the simplicity, no fancy angles, less
sides.

thanks for the good clear pics. I assume that it is the black filler tube
showing at top right. Does it lead to somewhere else when the engine is
installed?. From the pic it looks as though it might be pretty difficult to
get at.
I think the change would bedifficult to do in the UK where we do not have
the leeway of your Experimental Category (yet).
What did it do to your C of G? It would seem that it must move backwards
quite a bit from the original configuration of tanks laying athwartships (as
it were) right at the front of the cage
