Hello Pat,
My son-in-law (from Carlisle), occasionally reminds me of the mother
tongue's spelling and pronunciation variances with the Ahmurican
version of the de facto world language. Some say music is the common
language of the world but perhaps enthusiasm for thing that fly might
qualify as the great uniter.
Your humble servant,
Thom in Buffalo

Pat,
Flying has always been a uniter in my experience. In large social gatherings, if there are two aviation junkies present, somehow they will find each other and become fast friends on that basis alone, when otherwise they might not give each other the time of day. I don't even fly a Kolb anymore but you guys don't seem to mind that I play in the Kolb sand-box
I think maybe my Scots/English son-in-law having such a northern pronunciation and upbringing (with an Irish mother thrown in for good measure) may have been a factor in his decision to study French, in which he got his Phd. here in Ahmurica at the Univershity of Georgia (pronounced Jawja by the locals). He teaches Franch at a college here in Buffalo. But to his credit, he does like to fly and does so with me when he has the time.
The Univershity of Georgia and Georgia Tech (my alma mater and UGA's perennial rival) will be having their annual football competition this week. Aviation is the great uniter and football (round or ovalesque) is the great divider.

Pat
You're absolutely right about pilots magnetically drawing together
at parties, meetings, etc. Richard Bach wrote quite a bit about this.
Good also that old enemies can socialize peacefully & friendly-ly.
But many of the poor Args in the Falklands didn't even know where
they were, or why. No reason for them to bristle at the Brits
Can't imagine anyone butchering the English language worse than some
of us Ameddicans do --
Best,
Russ

You could be right Thom. I collect signed aviation prints and went
to a recent `signing` and there were the old boys, German and
English who fought each other in their Spits and Hurricanes against
the Me 109 and Fw 190`s all chatting away and getting along famously.
Last weekend there was a seminar at one of our Universities where
the Argentinians who invaded the Falklands and the Brits who took
it back met up for the weekend. All buddies.
Carlisle???? they speak worse English up there than you do....
Heh! Heh!
Cheers
Pat

Hi Russ,
the guy I heard on the radio was a General. Presumably he knew where he was.
By the way, I predicted the Falklands war nearly a year before it happened.
Our Parliament in their wisdom voted against spending money on extending the
runway at Stanley and, bearing in mind that the greatest concentrations of
krill occur in those waters and that is going to be invaluable in the future
I told my wife that the the message that decision sends to anyone looking
longingly at the Falklands is that we are not interested in the place.( That
must be the longest and most ill constructed sentence I have ever written.
Cant be bothered to change it. Standards are slipping.....)
Normally I wouldn`t bet on the sun coming up tomorrow but I was on the money
with that one.
