William Wynn's manual shows the motor mount as being built with the spools
as shown in the first drawing. I understand that Zenair now furnishes the
kits with longeron mounts to accommodate this type of motor mount.
However the older kits had the motor mount bolts welded to the brackets that
bolted to the longerons. This would require a mount with tabs as shown in
the next two illustrations.
The spool mounted engine mount places the welds in shear while the tab
mounted mount places the weld in tension, unless a member is folded over
parallel to the diagonal tube as shown in the middle drawing.
Question: is the tab mounted motor mount as durable and structurally sound
as the spool mounted?

Russell,
The tab-mounted mounts are as sound and durable if they're properly
welded. The spool type is perhaps stronger because
the weld is more in shear than tension to a minor degree. I don't know
that I've ever heard of a mount breaking because of the difference.

At least on the 601XL Zenith has always offered long and short mounting
bolts. The short bolts worked with motor mounts with flat plates while the
long bolts work with mounts with spools. You can see this in the latest
plans by comparing the Jabiru mount on 6-JE-1 with the dynafocal mount show
in 6-YE-2. This same choice is shown in my circa 2000 plans.
