Gday,
Does anyone have experience with digital video cameras that may help.....
I want to video take-offs and landings, then analyse frame by frame to determine angle of attack and speed. The older analog ones didn't have enough clarity in single frames, but I understand the digital ones are much better that way.....
Also want to use it for tuft-testing, and that means being able to hook up to a remote camera. It seems that most of the lower end DV cameras don't have such an input. Does anyone know of one that is capable in this regard??
There are still some questions posed on the list regarding Slats v/s VGs that I need to answer, but I'll leave all that until after all the distractions of this holiday season......
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas,
and fair skies and tailwinds always.....
JG

There is a new crop of digital camcorders that shoot 30 progressive frames per second instead of (or in addition to) 60 interlace fields per sec (that are separated in time by 1/60th sec). I have been considering the Canon Elura. I have had experience with the small NTSC color cameras (interlaced) that are easy to put out on a wing tip.. but I don't know how a remote camera could be inexpensively done with progressive scan, without putting the whole camcorder outside the cockpit somehow. There may be a creative solution for a small remote progressive camera. This probably doesn't help you too much..

I recently had to select a video camera and bought a digital still camera. Depending on the resolution and frame rate a Canon SD800 with a 4 gigabyte SDHC type memory card will shoot 30-172 minutes of video. At 640 by 480 pixels and 30 frames per second you can get 30 minutes and the clarity is outstanding. My tests indicate that a charged battery will last well over a hour while shooting a movie.

That's amazing inflight video - it really takes you for a ride!
I bought a cheapo wireless camera from eBay but it doesn't handle the light changes like that one does. That might be the answer, now just need a camcorder with AV input.....

Ron--
I have a set like the one you are suggesting. It works well tied into a
video monitor or TV but I'm having trouble trying to find a Video camera
that will interface with it. I'd like to be able to use the video camera to
record flights. I have a small JVC video camera but can find the appropriate
cables to tie in the R/C receiver. Any suggestions?

This guy interfaced with some video goggles. I don't know how to contact him
but there are credits at the end of the video and if you do pauses in that
area you might find a reference there..??

Perhaps someone more knowlegable might post some better help.. that video is really amazing ..and as I said there are credits at the end they go fast but perhaps with a quick eye and some patience you could catch a link there?

Remember that Australia uses the PAL standard - 25 frames per second.

Yeh, that's just what I'm trying to find out now - if I film in PAL, how

Regarding PAL - Youtube doesn't use standard full resolution video. I haven't uploaded anything to them but I suspect if you can save your video as a Quicktime, mpeg or similar format that you'd be OK. Check what the site says about video requirements.

When you upload to U-tube you convert from your local system to a digital
file which can be decoded/displayed by your computer.
