Christmas greetings from Down Under,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
I am connecting my XL Ailerons and have come up with some Q's. On XL plans 6-W-10, where the rod end connects to the belcrank with bolt AN5-10A, it does not show any washers? but the other end Rod end at the aileron side does show 2 washers.?? Should there be washers at the belcrank end?
Also the bolt AN3-12A that goes through the belcrank bushing also does not show any washer? My Airframe training says to use washers ad no washers go against this.. IS it just assumed that you would put washers on them without writing it on the plans? page 8 of the construction manual does state minimum one washer under nut after bolt grip length... and thats why its not mentioned on the plans???
So What have those that have gone before me, done??

Standard aircraft procedures should be used here. Typically, at least one washer is used under the nut, more are used if necessary. If more than four washers are needed to get proper grip length, the next shorter standard bolt should be used. The plans probably show two washers on the aileron end to highlight the fact that more than one is needed there. If the plans don't show washers, usually only one is needed. On Dec 21, 2006, at 1:30 AM, Chris sinfield wrote:

Hi Chris,
I'm afraid the plans are not so good as to include washers when they
are needed. Indeed, there are lots worse problems than that in the
details presented in the plans.
My own approach is to include up to two washers on each bolt when
needed for proper thread position of the nut. I prefer one washer
and sometimes use a shorter bolt than the specified one to get this result.
My take on the whole process and plans is that each builder must make
his own decisions on length bolts to use and how many washers to
use. With many hand made parts and many years from the original
design to the actual builder's efforts there are many cases where
judgement must override small issues like this one.
Best regards,
Paul

Re washers: the most important thing is that you should use a penny washer
under the nut so that should the ball come out of the rod end the rod cannot
detach from the horn. Would not be nice if it did!
