Hi any one know of circuitry that would show a clutch in transition I have a 

light at full up and full down but would like to see a light indicating 

movement..there is a micro switch for engage and disengage  for those  red and green 

indicator lights, but I can't figure out how to make the switches show 

travel..with like an amber light. I bought Bob's book but no help....JimL

Jim,  what I think you are looking for is pretty easy.



  You have simple microswitches operated at the ends to operate

  Red and Green LEDs  and want an  Amber  LED if neither Red

  nor Green is on / lighted ?



  My first thought is a differential amplifier using a bi-directional

  LED --- it lights Red for current flow (voltage differential) in

  one direction, Green for the opposite condition, and both R & G

  elements ( pseudo-Amber ) if the two inputs are the same.....

  but these bi-color LEDs are often awkward to discern the color,

  so I think I'd want the three separate LEDs instead.



  You might use a packaged logic gate, OR variety:   I'll doodle a

  bit and get back to you with a discrete components schematic.

  ( This will actually be the components inside the OR gate. )



  With the OR gate, the two inputs A  &  B  would be connected

  to the "hot" side of each microswitched-LED.   The OR gate 

  output  C  would be pulled-up via the amber LED.



  "If either ( A  OR  B ) goes high (R or G lighted) output C is high

    and the Amber LED is not lighted."



  "If  both ( A  OR  B ) are low (R & G not lighted) output C is low

    and the Amber LED lights."



  Neat thing about Logic is its flexibility --- an AND gate, a NAND

  (not-AND), a NOR (Not-OR), etc. can all be used easily to get

  the light-on / off  you are wanting.



  A good, real electronics parts store ( NOT radio shack ) will have

  Spec Sheets and Truth Tables for their line (Brand) of devices that

  will identify the right pin #'s on the logic gate IC package you

choose.

One way you could maybe do this is to use a slider type of potentiometer

hooked to the linkage. This would act as a variable voltage divider. Then

all you need is a circuit that would read the voltage and display it on a

bar graph display. I started tinkering with something like this a while back

but never finished it out. I am planning on using something like this on the

landing brake on my Cozy. If your interested I could dig up what info I have

and send it to you?

Hello Jim,



Here are two simple suggestions:



1/ If you are looking for some kind of  "in transit" indicator, you 

could use two relays (low power), one powered from the full-up switch, 

the other from the full-down switch.



When neither of them is activated, the amber light is powered (through 

the Normally Close relays contacts). As soon as the full-up or full-down 

switch powers its associated light, its relay open the circuit to the 

amber light and the amber light turns off.



2/ If the micro-switchs are SPDT type (single pole - two positions), it 

*could* be possible to to add the amber light without any relay.



I could send you a simple hand drawn schematic.
