The diagram on Page 10-2 of the illustrated parts cat. for the 912 clearly 

shows a magnet excited alternator, no field coil. This arrangment is similar 

to the two strokes. However, pages 12-2 and 13-2 show the AUX alternator, 

which is clearly a conventional field excited alternator similar to your 

car. Hope this helps.
