Here's some things that I'd like to see in the video. First off hard core
aerobatic types of manuevers might suggest that the Arion guys approve of
their aircraft being aerobatic, which isn't the case. Also on film the make
your head spin kind of manuevers don't look as good as more graceful and
gradual manuevers. With that in mind here's what I propose.
A shot air to air in close formation with the plane being filmed peeling off
and banking away
A shot where the camera plane is flying in close and slides underneath from
right to left under the tail underside of the plane being filmed
A shot where in formation and the plane being filmed pulls up and gains
maybe 2-300 feet and rolls past the 90 and back down through the film
aircrafts altitude on the other side
A shot where the filmer is close behind the plane being filmed and following
it through a smooth and coordinated 360 degree steep turn in each direction.
A shot from the air of the two planes doing a formation takeoff
A shot from the air of the two doing a formation low alt, high speed pass
A shot from the ground of the two planes doing a gradual and slightly banked
turn in formation from left to right down low. (kind of like a formation
photo pass at airshows)
A shot from the ground of the two planes doing a formation low altitude high
speed pass with a max performance climb up to about 1000k after that.
(perhaps the lead plane climbs out and at the same time the chase banks and
turns to make a downwind, while lead stays on runway heading)
Just a few things that I thought of that would look good. Also got an idea
for the music to be set to. I'll show Buz when he's down. Brian W.

Brian,
All of that sounds great. Depending on how much maneuvering they want on the video (I agree with your aerobatic thoughts) I would add some lazy eights and chandells. We would follow in trail to get the shot of him going up, banking through the horizon, and then down again. Depending on how steep he would want to climb or how steep he would want to bank, I think I would look good. I have done lots of there going vertical in pitch and 90 degrees in bank - not quite a hammer head, but more like a lazy eight to the max. The thing we would have to decide on is how far back in trail we would need to be to get the full effect of the Lightning maneuvering. You probably have a zoom on your camera. It all sounds like good fun to me.
Linda sent a message today that there was a problem with their FAA paperwork, so the inspection will not be this week. I will delay my trip out there until they are ready. Probably will slip things a week or so.

Buz,
I think this is all entirely possible and would look good. Better to look
graceful than harsh manuevers. I found this to be the case with a midfield
break as well. With the Esqual you can turn tight enough to get inside of
Hwy231 in the pattern at Shelbyville, but if you just go power to idle and
make a nice smooth and coordinated turn it turns out really pretty and sets
you up for a perfect poweroff approach to landing. Yes, my camera does have
a zoom. Haven't used the camera much yet as it is new and so it might take
me a little getting used to, but still it would work really well. Brian W.

Buz,
Was wondering how we're going to do the shots. Will you use Linda's
plane and Nick fly the prototype? If so where does the camera guy (me I
guess) sit? I don't know enough about these experimental aircraft rules at
all. Can I fly aboard a plane without having the 40 hours on it? I guess
that we could always alternatively use BZ to shoot the arials and two
Lightnings when I'm on the ground. It'd be great if I could talk to the
other plane during filming, but safety is most important. Perhaps we can
get together on the ground and draw out a list of manuevers and I can relay
on to you if we got a good enough shot, and if we need to redo it, how we
need to redo it, and then you pass it along to Nick. When I'm on the ground
I can have a handheld and I'll keep quiet during the low altitude shots and
so you two can communicate back and forth and tell you how it looked and if
anything needs to be changed after you climb out. I think that mainly a
really good briefing on the ground before and after will get us the desired
results and the greatest margin of safety. This will involve a lot of close
formation and manuevering around the aircraft to get different views. I
know that you and Nick are both great sticks and you probably have more
formation time that most of us have total time, but just trying to come up
with a plan and make sure we get the shots that we want and everybody is on
the same page. Brian W.

Brian,
Hopefully you are running all of this by Nick and Pete. I feel confident that they will want this video for future marketing. I can envision the video running continually at their booth at OSH or LAL. At small fly ins where they don't have a booth, it would even be neat to have a small DVD player on top of the instrument panel running the video. I am sure they would also like you to add the video to the Lightning web site.
We will be shooting from my airplane for all the air to air shots - since Lightning in flight video is the goal. (You can not carry passengers during the 40 hour test period.) The way my airplane is set up either of us can transmit to Nick in the prototype. I can also put you in either seat if that makes a difference. Some of the pre flight planning factors - other than the standard formation brief items and the planned maneuvers - will be specific areas to fly over (do we want some specific ground area to show?) and the time of day will determine where the sun is - we don't want too much video looking into the sun.
For the two ship Lightning formation shots I would hope to use Linda's airplane (with her approval of course) and I would hope that it would have the wheel pants and gear leg fairings on by then. We can shoot some of the sequences with you by the runway and hopefully some with you in a third airplane. Nick and I fly lots of formation together (yes, I probably have well over 4000 in formation alone), and we have also flown occasional three ship formation with Ben in the Jabiru 400. You in the 400 with Ben (or with Pete in the 250) would make a great camera ship for the aerial formation shots of the two Lightnings. We will continue to flesh out the plan as we get closer to the actual time frame.

Buz,
Actually I haven't talked to Nick or Pete about it. I haven't been out
there since we started the discussion, but somebody said that they needed
one on the website and it is a thought that I had had as well. I think that
people get a better feel with video than they do with still pics. If we
could find Nick when he's not too busy I'm sure he'd be all for it. I might
go by tomorrow and talk to them about it after work. Some other factors to
consider is that the video would have to be a reasonable length to show the
plane, but also downloadable by the average joe in a reasonable length of
time. You brought out some good points about time of day. I think that the
Tim's Fjord Lake where they shot your plane is a great backdrop. I thought
that nick had mentioned something about the video too, but too little sleep
and not enough food lately is affecting my memory. Of course we'll have to
get approval. I think that they would both be willing, but we'll see what

Earl has also shown intrest in flying for the video and he is only in atlanta......his is also light sport compliant and is configured differantly and may make for some good shots too..
