I have heard to many stories about squeeze bulb primer check valve failure they are made for boats where you don't have to worry about an off field landing when they fail
a good primer pump is much better to operate and it looks like a better installation than an inline bulb any way
I wouldn't trust any inline Squeeze primer

My thoughts only

Hi Ellery, could you describe how you install and plumb the pump in tha application of priming the float bowl. Also what brand pump. I have used the squeeze pump on Offshore Skiffs for decades and never had a problem. We used to keep a spare but usually it would go bad before the one in use would. Probably because the Fuel oil mix preserves the bulb. However, I do not think that I would like to change out the line during a typical Florida Squall while 20 miles Offshore.
In answer to the bypass line, I think that it is more important to be there to eliminate the slight drag on the fuel that the check valve creates vs anticipation of the valve blocking.
