I posted earlier You can un screw the end that snaps on to your Plug and slide the new boot over the length of your wires
(CAUTION ) the end in the CDI is a perminent wire do not remove it

Many thanks to those who have respoded to my question, both on and off the list...
Bottom line now appears clear.... I KNOW the plug caps will come off OK... there are
obviously serious questions about the coil end of the wires... so the prudent approach would seem to be to work
from the sparkplug end and thread the new boots on from there... I will do that.
