I understand that several HRII's are flying with the slightly larger RV-8 tail feathers. I have no personal knowledge on that but I'm sure there are HRII drivers out there that will respond. KABONG Do Not Archive

I have built and flown two HRIIs with RV8 tails. They are easy to build and the vertical surfaces work quite well. The elevators can be described as adequate but could benefit from a bit more chord, one inch would do. Having built and flown rockets with the F1 tail I would say that it is my preference. The vertical surfaces are not quite as tall as the 8 tail but the rudder is larger, the elevators are also larger and provide better control in the flare. Aesthetically, in my opinion, the F1 tail is the most pleasing of all the options. Many rockets use the RV4 tail but I have not flown one myself.

I have a HR2 with F1 tail (there a few around in this config). As you might guess, this works well. My only hesitation, I’m not convinced about the riveted trailing edge on the elevator.
Many F1 guys complain of high stick force but you don’t here that from the HR guys with folded trailing edges. Of course, the control surface is larger too but I suspect the trailing edge shape to be contributing.
The F1 tail is a good option and probably the best option.
Good Luck

Tony
