Earlier I asked about needing to flush a brand new 912 since the factory  had coolant in the lines to do test runs. I received this reply from Rotax via  LEAF:



The factory runs a 50/50 mixture of conventional cooling  liquid.



If he wants use Evans he need not to flush the cooling circuit.  There is not so much residue in the system that it is a problem. This small  amount of water will evaporate out of the radiator cap when the engine is hot  enough.

 I am not an expert nor a mechanic, only a pilot /  builder, but from what I heard and read, EVANS coolant cannot be mixed with  water, even a small quantity, therefore if I were you, I would drain  carefully all the circuit and flush it  thoroughly.

  

 By the way, I am a bit confused about this  coolant issue in 912 engines, because I received a mandatory service bulletin  from ROTAX, saying to use EVANS coolant, and now you received a reply saying  that the factory runs a mixture of conventional cooling liquid  !??...

  

 Which is correct?

The Evans is mainly propylene-glycol that mixes nicely with water. What 

Evans means, is that when mixed with water, the propylene-glycol boiling 

point gets lower than when pure. So the ability to run without boiling 

at atmospheric pressure is lower, but it is no problem with our 

pressurized coolant circuits.

The Rotax SB says that you CAN use Evans instead of the 50/50 mix. They 

don't say that you SHOULD or MUST.

Only thing, the limitations are not the same following which coolant you 

put into your engine.



Also, as physics dictates, they advise you that the Evans specific heat 

is lower, so your engine may run hotter.

So if your cooling is marginal, something must be done.

Hi Guys,



During my class with Eric Tucker from Rotax he stated that you should just go ahead and use the 50/50 mix and not worry. He stated that if you are running really high temps then use the Evans. The Evans helps the engines hot spots from vaporizing water and causing problems at that hot spot. Evans will run slightly hotter anyway, as much as 30F-40F. That being said I have used Evans for 4 years in my Rotax without any issues. It is a personal choice, unless you run really hot.

You are right about not worrying about residual water in a new engine out of the box. If it is an engine that has the 50/50 mix in it right now then use the Evans Prep fluid first.



Even if you drain a Rotax engine you can never make it totally dry of all water. There are places you can't get to. If you are really worried about any residual then run some prep fluid through it and sleep at night.
