Hello Lowell and Noel,
I think we agree that any composite construction, being polyester or
epoxy with glass-fibre, carbon-fibre or Kevlar, has an optimal
proportion ratio that ensure best strength-weight ratio, whether for
maritime, aviation or industrial use - it is the same.
I don't know about the US but in the UK, it is often called GRP (glass
reinforced plastic) and I think it's a misnomer because some may think
of it as e.g. a cement construction that is reinforced with steel rods
or mesh. What it is, really, is a glass-fibre construction where the
fibre is glued together with a resin. A GRP boat is mostly a glass boat
but I understand that some may not like the thought of it!
NOTE: I hesitated to call this thread OFF-TOPIC because, after all,
some of us make cowlings, etc. out of composite material including
resin. However, I have added Do not archive to all my postings on the
subject. I don't think it's worth archiving.
Regarding the flame going on now, I'll stay out of it but, please,
don't split the list into two! The power of it is the sum of all the
members, even the not-so-whatever ones who may pester some with
off-topic one-liners.
Cheers,
Michel
