All,
At the end of this week I'll be flying from San Diego to
Phoenix for the Desert Fox Fly-in. I then intend to leave Sunday and
fly to Ft. Worth, Texas. As I will be travelling at highway speeds
I'll need to stop a few times on the way, and overnight at least
once. Do you have any recommendations for a comfortable, fun
overnight stop? (I'll be bringing camping equipment, just in case.)
Are there any other must-see stops or scenery I should note?
Thanks,
Guy Buchanan

I'll be interested in hearing about your flight, Guy. I'm going the
other way....Florida to California...and flying as a Sport Pilot. Are
you a SP, or Private rated. I asked a few weeks ago about crossing
the mountains in this area, and got one reply...I'd like to hear more
options.

Lynn,
What part of California is your destination? There are lots of ways to get
through the mountains here. I 80 crosses West of Reno (N. of Lake Tahoe) at
an elevation of about 7200 ft, and US 50 South of Lake Tahoe at about 6500
ft. The trick is to cross over the saddles rather than the peaks. There
are also passes to the South with elevations that won't compromise your
limitations. I am not as familiar with those areas.
Incidentally if you are in the North - Sacramento area - you have a place to
stay here. We are in a residential airpark and your airplane will be right
outside your bedroom window. The same invitation to anyone else passing
through.
Incidentally again, our fly-in will be on June 9th this year. If that is
during your sojourne in California, you are more than welcome to join us.
you would, without a doubt, set the all time distance record. Check:

Hi Lowell-
My ultimate destination is up at Duane's place in Auburn/Newcastle.
I'll be coming by way of Sun 'n' Fun in Florida, then on to mid-
Texas, then California via whatever route is the easiest/lowest
elevation, based on my restriction of 10,000 feet MSL (give or take a
couple of feet if nobody's watching).
Hey, I might just stretch the stay in order to attend the Cameron
Park Fly-in...does the "long distance award" allow for such trips as
this, or does it have to be a "purpose" trip? : )
Get the lawyers working on that one, and get back to me. : )
