Thanks for the plot Bob. The points that don't look consistent are the ones
that I was wanting to repeat.

It IS a big difference between props. I am really much happier with my
plane now. It doesn't mean that the Powerfin is a bad prop, it just means
it is not the right prop for this application. I have trouble thinking of
my plane as a "fast" plane, but the Warp prop is better for this plane and
this engine.

Has any one tried the Kool prop? There is a guy putting them on trikes and
says they are the best. Not that I doubt him but he is the agent.

I would like to see a comparison between WD and the GSC. I have a three blade GSC on my Kitfox 5 with the UL 912. Sure like the looks of it, but does it perform?

Mark,

This question poses a few problems. Mostly getting responses from guys that
have used both on the same airplane.

I can give some general info which also brings in the problems with the
comparisons. This will be regarding Model IVs with 912UL engines. In the
beginning of the groiup summer flights we were a flight of 4 Kitfoxes and a
Rans s-6. The Rans doesn't count as it had a ULS and his experience was
with a Warp and a NSI CAP 140.

Of the four Kitfoxes one flew behind a 582 and that doesn't count either.
The three IVs with 912s, two had Warps and the other a GSC. One of the Warp
planes was definitely faster due to lots of fairings etc, but since we all
flew the same speed for group reasons that airplane was distinguished by
fuel economy, burning at least a gallon an hour less than the other two.
One of the other airplanes - the one with the Warp was extremely light at
604 lbs empty but was similar to the GSC in economy - tube gear, different
fairings. The big change came in when the GSC and light Warp went to the
PowerFin. Even after lots of time trying to find the most optimum pitch, a
major drop off in cruise, but after trimming the inch of each blade climbed
like you wouldn't believe with marginal improvement in cruise. Eventually
the one went back to his GSC and then to the cockpit adjustable IVO for
significantly improved performance and the other to the Warp.

What does this all mean, who knows for sure. The impression is that Warp
will improve on the GSC, most definitely on the PowerFin and the IVO the
best if you don't mind dealing with the complexity.

Just to add a bit of information to what Lowell provided. I had a GSC prop
and liked it ok. Changed to a ground adjustable light weight IVO and have
flown about 100 hours with it.

I have nothing against the GSC and actually I think it looks better on the
Kitfox than the IVO. However, the IVO is much easier to adjust. The pitch
on the IVO can be changed by turning one bold which adjusts all three blades
at the same time. This takes only a couple of minutes whereas the GSC is
more involved because it is necessary to adjust each blade individually.

My observation is that I gained about 5mph in cruise with the IVO and it is
definitely quieter than the GSC. The only down side I know of is that some
people think the IVO is prone to coming apart. My opinion is that the IVO
is safe so long as it is installed properly and checked regularly according
to the IVO specs. Another word of caution on the IVO should you decide to
get one; be sure you get the right crush plates. I had smooth hubs sent to
me where they should have been knurled. IVO did sent the correct plates
immediately.

To do over again, I would still go with the IVO.

This is just my opinion. Hope it helps.

I have an Ivo Prop on my Model IV-1200. Have 1200 hours behind it, that
prop is great, almost all the Desert Fox Squadron flys with them. My is in
flight adjustable and have been with IVO prop since first flight in 1997.
IVO props do not break or come apart. Clint

Looking for opinions,
I have an S5 and will be putting on the 912 ULS. I also purchased the IVO
medium 72". I am thinking about mounting the IVO in the 2 blade
configuration to save weight and wanting to put the plane on floats later
on. Has anyone tried the IVO 72" 3 or 2 blade?

Holy crap, I just flew with a new IVO 70". Man O man, what a difference. I can run down the runway at 80mph and pull up and hit 1800ft per minute without having to neutral the stick, just kept climbing. So far cruise is at least 15mph faster. WOW is all I can say. This is the prop for my plane.

Mike:

What prop were you using before you switched to the IVO? Your report is
very interesting, to say the least, but only half complete.

Sorry, this is not a joke. That IVO is one amazing prop. The air was pretty unstable yesterday so I went up on a second flight in the afternoon. I stayed in the pattern and had fun fun fun, doing touch and goes. From a stop I would take off, as soon as the plane lifted off I would pitch it for 50, rpm of 5400 and the climb rate was a constant 1800fpm. If I come around and did a wheel landing and run 5 ft off the runway and run up to 80ias and then pull up, nice g's on the face and maintain 50, I would jump to 2000fpm and then stable out to 1800fpm. Needless to say, I was smiling and having fun, I never changed the pitch of the prop in the pattern, left it flat. Oh, mine is inflight adjustable.

Was it a 3 blade with the F blades? (like I have hanging on my wall and was
thinking about trying on my Avid) Also, which IVO blades do you have,
ultralight or mediums? Thanks, Jim Chuk

the powerfin is the f-72 shortened to 68". The IVO is the ultralight prop. Thing is I feel I've wasted all this flying time with a S L O W or D O G prop.

I think in the interest of fairness and letting it all hang out. On the
various flights to, during and from the fly-in in arizona a couple of
things.

The flyijng buddy with the PowerFin has a screamer. Somehow one of the
fastest airplanes in the group. And we made two remote field landings to
service the electrics on two of the IVOs. One from a loose wire and the
other a stuck brush. In both instances the prop would not move to coarse
pitch leaving the pilots unable to keep up in the group flights.

I think in the interest of fairness, I can hit a happy mediun with the IVO and make it a fixed pitch and do better than the powerfin.
