Can anyone advise me as to appropriate wire and guage for the
flap motor wiring? Looks like four conductors are required. Do they all
need to be heavy enough for the motor draw, or just two of them? Would it be
criminal to use trailer wiring cable?

If this is for an XL then 6-B-20 (Date 06/03) shows that all 4 wires carry
the full current. I've measure a steady-state current draw of about 4 amps.
For that current over a rough length of 7-10 feet 18 gauge would be a
suitable size:

Generally Tefzel wire is recommended in aircraft.

Lynn, one thing that was not explained in detail about
the wire type is the reason why you should use tefzel
wiring.
In the event of an electrical fire or meltdown, PVC
insulated automotive wire gives off a very toxic smoke
that can quickly incapacitate the pilot in an enclosed
cockpit. Tefzel, on the other hand, while giving off
an annoying smoke, should not be seriously harmful.
The trailer wiring you mentioned would most likely be
PVC insulated.
A couple of good sources of information on aircraft
wiring are the aeroelectric connection website. Jon
Croke has a good beginners DVD on wiring on the
homebuilthelp.com website. Also, Greg Richter of Blue
Mountain Avionics has a good beginners guide to
electrical systems but it is not easy to find on his
website. I couldn't find it the last time I looked.
Hope this info helps.

Tefzel is also a lot more nick-resistant.
