Well the first annual Starhill-Nauga Field Fly Around is on. John Hauck & John Williamson called me yesterday from Homer's Farm to confirm. It is scheduled for July 13th, July 14th and July 15th. This will be a get together, talk, fly, and eat.
Friday, July 13th (that don't sound good)- Expect arrivals to start after lunch on Friday. John Hauck has put in an order for Sandy's red beans with rice, sausage, and cornbread for supper.
Saturday, July 14th - We'll fix some breakfast (eggs, sausage, bisquits?). Lunch will be catfish dinners put on by local EAA Chapter 244 at False River Airpark (HZR) about 10.5 NM west across the Mississippi River from Nauga Field. Dinners have been about $6.00/plate plus cold drinks. Supper will be wild pig and fixings, cooked by my landlord back at Nauga Field.
Sunday, July 15th - We'll fix some breakfast again. Anyone who hasn't left by noon, we'll scrounge some lunch.
This is a pretty tight, friendly community. The families and kids often have gatherings at the creek. I'm pretty sure most of the community will be around for the pig roast.
Info on Nauga Field (LS35) -http://www.airnav.com/airport/LS35
Don't mean to sound rude or insult anyone. Just want to shoot straight. Nauga Field is a 1550 ft grass runway with trees and power lines at both ends. Up to now, John Hauck and I have been the only to use the field. I found it to be no problem after I practiced for a while. The power lines are actually at or below the tree lines. The thresoholds are displaced 450 ft from the tree line and marked with white buckets. That leaves 1100 feet for landing. This is not a field for a novice or anyone who is used to landing on 2500 foot plus runways with minimal obstructions. It is no problem for people with experience, practice, and understand what these Kolbs can really do. It is can be a little intimidating visually if you have never attempted an approach at a smaller rural strip. Please don't make this your first attempt.
If you will be attending, please call or email to confirm, so we can get the groceries right. Best to call on my cell phone - 225-505-4353. Please forgive me in advance if I don't answer and you have to leave a message. I work shift work, which means I work when a normal person is sleeping and vice a versa. I will return your call.
Alright, this is mid-July, in south Louisiana. It will be hot.
We'll have the use of the camp-FBO at Nauga Field. That includes AC, TV, stove, running water, pool table, couches. Showers and serious sittings will be available just across the road from the NE end of the runway at the Starhill Volunteer Fire Station. We'll have some way of shuttling back and forth to the Fire Station like four wheelers and a trailer so you don't have to walk. Not sure how many will be coming. The camp has a bunk room that can sleep about four. A few more can sleep on the couches at the Fire Station. I think there is room for about 8 to sleep in the AC on a first come, first serve basis. The rest will tent it. We have two spare bedrooms back at the house for those that can't go anywhere without their loving wives.
I'll have to work on the fuel supply. I have two 5 gallon jugs dedicated to the plane. There is a Chevron gas station within 5 minutes. Self service 100LL is available at False River (HZR). I'll get you gas for your return trips. Maybe we can start managing that Saturday evening so there won't be a mad rush Sunday morning.
Hope to see you there! Let me know if you are coming.
Confirmed so far:

Everything sounds real good to me.
When I first mentioned this Fly-In possibility, I did not mean for you to take it on. But since you have, what can we bring to help you out? Sodas, beer, fruit or whatever, these Kolbs have hauled groceries before.
Tell us what you want and we can add an item beside our names on the roster.

John W and all,
Don't need to bring anything. I know that doesn't set with some folks (the good ones). If it will make folks feel better, we can put out a donation jar but it really isn't necessary. In Starhill we enjoy and take pride in being good host. Hope everyone finds that to be the case. The one thing that you could do for me as a favor is to give a few of the locals a 15 minute ride. Especially my landlord, who will be cooking Saturday night. Because of laying off for so long and still making sure I put everything back together right, I haven't taken a passenger up yet.
If you want to bring snack stuff or fruit for in between meals and at night, bring what you like.
Would like you to bring one item though. I would like to establish the shortest landing distance for Nauga Field. A little "freindly competition". If everyone could bring a bean bag marker or sock weighted down, that would be great. I figure everyone will have 6 or so landings by Saturday evening. If you nail a landing that you want to measure, you drop the marker at your tire.
Rules and why's (first pass):
1) Distance will be measured from threshold to point where tire stops. Using the tire because those Kolbra's have long snouts and wouldn't want you to be at a disadvantage. A good approach can aim well short of the threshold and that is to your advantage.
2) Markers can be repositioned up until Saturday evening (say 7:00 pm) when all the flying is done for the day. If you get better, you can use your best.
3) The distance will be true ground roll with no brakes (honor system). Put this rule in after seeing the video of John H at the Alvord. Also want to make things even for the guys with smaller wheels and brakes. I land with no brakes and have more than 500 feet to spare with no problem, most of the time.
4) Marker has to be heavy enough to stay put and small enough not to be an obstacle or hazard on the runway. No blowing the marker back 10 feet with your prop wash by "accident".
5) Each contestant must have a clear understanding of the obstacles at the end of the runway. The only one of concern is the powerline at the edge of the road on the NW end. If someone got real aggressive and snuck in between and even with the tops of the trees, it could come into play. I'm talking real aggressive though. Just need to be aware that it is there.
6) Only Kolbs are eligible for first prize. Other makes can participate for bragging rights but I don't think that will be an issue.
If you have suggestions or changes, we can make them.
The first prize will be an OFFICIAL NAUGA. However, this NAUGA is kinda like the Ryder's Cup or the Stanely Cup. The winner maintains possession until the next sanctioned competition takes place. At that time, it is passed to the new winner.
There has been a slight menu change. We were able to trap a wild Bopotamus today. That is what we will be having for supper Satuday night. You'll have to wait to hear the story behind the Starhill Bopotamus and the Nauga when you get here. The Starhill story teller and head BS'er will explain it all as many times as you are willing to hear it.
Gary Haley sent an email and said he plans to be there. Paul Petty and Mr Charlie hope to come if they can get the test hours flown off in time. Haven't heard from Steven Green yet. If someone can call him or send me his number directly, I'll call him. There are a few locals that fly in and few others that may to drive in and visit. Any others I don't know about?
Hope to see you guys soon. Hope the weather is with us too.

OK you are right. How about only enough brakes to maintain centerline? No standing it on the nose!

Hi John W:
Talked to Ronnie Smith yesterday. I have a leaking oil pressure
sending unit. Only a drip, but enough to make a mess. Will this make
me fall out of the sky before I reach Nauga Field, LA???
We can add Ronnie as a tentative attendee for now. Give him a call
and give him another invite. I'll remind him again when I get back
from OKC. Leaving here Sunday morning, pulling 5th wheel, to attend
the SF Assn Convention. Will be back in time to get ready to fly to
John B's flyin.
Anybody in the OKC area??? I'll be there most all week with plenty of
free time. Staying at the Twin Fountains RV Park on the north east
side of OKC, about 7 miles from the downtown Sheraton, where the
Convention is being held.

Hey John H.
That is great! What would Ronnie S fly in? I remember a cessna. Does he have something lighter and slower?
I did give John Cooley a bump. He has to work that weekend. Nobody understands that better than me. It is hard for us guys with full time jobs keep up with you "fly here, there, everywhere" retired guys.
You guys met Bruce Williams (Kitfox) and his wife Tina at MV 2004, the one I didn't get to. They will be joining us and are looking forward to seeing you guys again.
Just finished cutting the grass on the runway and even put down a little fertilizer. Was going fly but thunder boomer just formed up. Will try to sneak away early AM. Probably will cut the grass one more time and then that Friday morning just before you guys start getting here.
We're excited here. Come on.

Pencil me in for a maybe. Sometimes work has their way with me and spoils
