Has anyone tried the VW conversions? Great Plains has a couple of
100 hp versions. I know the Rotax 912 is popular but I have not
heard anything about the competition. How about 80 hp vs 100
hp? Are most older 701 80 hp? Jerry

There is a 701 with a VW conversion here in Missouri. The owner got so many e-mails he dropped his subscription.
Try Valley Engineering ( makers of the Great Plains PSRU and Culver props) The even offer a VW firewall forward package for the 701 http://www.culverprops.com/index.php

Gerry,
The ZAC website lists a lot of custom engine installations.
I chose the Jabiru 2200 because its a standard installation and within the 100 hp and 200 lbs installed weight limitations for the rev-4 and later 701. Earlier models are limited to 130 lbs. (they can go over this but will no longer comply with TP 10141e design standards)
there has been one VW with redrive installed North of me, but last I heard they were having overheating issues. Because the 701 flys slow, the cooling flow available is limited. There is a Corvair installation South of me but the engine is up for sale and being replaced with a Jabiru. I dont know the reason but heating and weight would be likely. Most others here are 912 or 912s. The 912s is not so popular as they shake things to bits, that may have improved now with the new ring mount frame. Almost the same performance can be had from the Rotax 582 or Simminoni Victor.
Regards, Ralph

Thanks Ralph, I have spent most of today on the internet looking at
engines. Like most everyone, I like small engines that pump out a
lot of power. If only the AeroVee was 100hp...... But, I am such a
beginner here. All I want is enough power to get out of my pasture
(800 ft runway). If 80 hp would do it, that is what I would go
for. Jerry
