George/Gang,
I grew up in North San Diego county in a little town called Rancho Bernardo/Poway area during the 70's and 80's. Back then "Blacks Beach" was the nude bathing beach for the San Diego area. As a surfing youth, inexplicably the rip tides would suddenly and forcefully push us over to the Black Beach surf. I think I spent more time on the beach and surf then I did up on the cliffs flying RC gliders.
George, one could appreciate the challenge mother nature there........I know I did......and I'm not talking about the surf, or soaring either. ;O)

hey pat if you have the time, as I know you will have the urge,as a glider pilot, to go to La Jolla, just north of San Diego and go to the top of the cliff overlooking the Pacific ocean just over "Black beach". You will be amazed.... if it hasn't fallen into the ocean yet. To anyone who appreciates challenging mother nature ... successfully, that is, the soaring done there is phenomenal.... if it is still going on, does anyone know?

which reminds me when my wife barb and I went there 20 years or so ago, I was utterly amazed at the wonder of the winds and high altitude of the cliffs off of which people such as myself.... I considered myself as normal people then..... were willfully jumping off the cliffs seemingly into the pacific ocean. Of course they were immediately lifted before our eyes up as soon as they launched themselves, above the lip of the cliff in an august ascension that defied earthly description.
It was from this joyous scene that my pioneering spirit caused me to meander to an area of the cliff that was cordoned off in fear that the cliff would take whatever was on it and deposit it abruptly 500 feet down into the ocean. My wife called out in fear that I might disappear forever before the death certificate was properly filled out, that I was on unhallowed ground, and that my life was in danger. I peered over the cliff to the ground and yelled back to her that I thought that I saw a nude man walking down the beach in a black hat only.
Before I had pronounced "black hat" I felt her brushing my arm, with neck craned, asking expectantly ....."where is he?"
I guess she showed her pioneering spirit too.
This happened before I purchased my Kolb Firestar KX......long ago.

Yes....they still fly gliders at Torrey Pines Gliderport about 2 times a year in the Spring for a month or so and around the Fall for a month.
www.flytorrey.com
Torrey Pines webcam:
http://w9if.net/iweb/axis2100/index.php
And a live controlable Torrey webcam at the University:
http://www.jcsg.org/scripts/prod/video/view.htm
I took my Paraglider training there....its beautifull.
Blacks beach is also still nude as before.
The RC guys have taken to crashing into full scale gliders recently.....last week doing about $5,000 damage to the leading edge of a Glider and ending its short season at Torrey.
I know that the RC's would routinely crash into paragliders and the occasional Hang glider......I think the RC'ers days at Torrey Gliderport are numbered due to those serious conflicts.

Blacks beach is also still nude as before but your not going to see many Model quality females.....it has become a popular hangout for the gay/lesbian community and you are more like to see big fat guys strutting along the beach hoping to attract another guys fancy.
As a matter of fact I was warned by the paraglider gang not to look down at the bushes by the far end of the beach......so of course I did.....and instantly discovered guys in bushes doing each other.....and of course only visible from the air....isnt that special!!!
Ray, Sir. I NEVER respond to this type of material but you sir have crossed the line! Please take this type of BS somewhere else.

You mean.. on purpose? A charge of attempted murder would seem appropriate.

I have to appologise if my comments about Blacks Beach have offended.
Perhaps I was a little to blunt and could have choosen my words better, but in fact that IS what goes on at Blacks Beach, no embelishments.
I was not picking on any groups in particular, just telling it how it was from my persepctive.
I edited out all the gorey details.......
Again, my appologies!

Im sure the RC flyer avoid traffic as best they can, but the depth perception is just to difficult to judge for them to avoid collisions.
Fortunately they are required to carry the AMA insurance if they fly there.

Thanx Ray...
A lot of us, especially us Kalifonians, know about that beach, but your description was just too much information...
It's been real windy here in "Lovely" Fresno, so the Kolb's been indoors... I had hoped to go flying tomorrow, but it looks like another front is moving in...
Who said, "It never rains in sunny Kalifonia"?...

Ray:
I think we have to remind ourselves that this is the Kolb Aircraft
Builders and Flyers List. If we keep our comments related to Kolbs,
we hold the interest of those that subscribe to the Kolb List because
we build, fly, and enjoy these little airplanes and other people with
the same interest.
If you are here because of other reasons, perhaps you are in the wrong
place. However, keep your comments related to Kolbs and the "real
Kolbers" will be more than happy.
Appology accepted on my part,
john h
