Sorry for the quality, but I have attached some pictures of our Rosen Sun Visor installation. I am getting a quote on our custom mount from a local machine shop and am getting a quote from Rosen on a group buy for the visors. We tried to find a place on the sides to install a visor, but there just isn’t a good place to put it that won’t block the pilot’s vision when he isn’t using the visor. This is a 3-axis visor, so it can be used to block sun from the pilot or copilot’s front anywhere in the windshield and can also block the pilot’s right or copilot’s left. Unfortunately we couldn’t find any way to block the sun from the pilot’s left or copilot’s right except a suction cup or static cling piece. The visor base would mount on the cabin top using two of the 4 screws that hold the front bar to the cabin top.

Please let me know off the list if you are interested and I will put a list together and let you know when I know how much it would cost. I am hoping to keep it under $200 including the visor (big or small lense) and the custom black-anodized base.

Yes, that would be one visor and the mount. I am hoping to get it down to the $175 range, but can’t promise yet.

Jesse,

In your research, did you look at building a fiberglass epoxy mounting pad on the cabin top with some bolt stubs to mount the visor bracket? If it were placed on the outer top corner on the front window (where car visors mount) it mite allow the visor to cover the side window.

Also by what date do we need to let you know?

Interestingly, last year before and after Sun-N-Fun, I had worked with
Mike from Rosen on getting a custom RV-10 system put together. I
created templates, he sent parts, we started to lay out an RV-10 system,
and then they just got too busy and started blowing the RV-10 project
off for other things. At OSH, they said they were still too busy, and
ever since they haven't had time either. But, I did spend some time
getting a design together but they just needed to come up with one
custom bracket and then the RV-10 would be able to have dual visors
that would not only work on boths sides, but could be flipped
completely out of the way too. I was hoping that one day they'd
spend the time to finish up, because it would be a nice system.
From the looks of it, although having one visor is a HUGE improvement,
it's still far from ideal and is a real compromise in quality from
what you'd get with a system in something like a mooney or a
bonanza....so it would be great to see the project taken further.
Rosen did say that they could easily create custom shaped visors, but
they just didn't have the time to make the custom mount that I was
working up for them. My intention is to still go that route, even if
they don't do the mount themselves. I think with them making come
custom shaped visors, it wouldn't be too hard to get someone to make
a quantity of mounts and have a pretty slick RV-10 system. I may have
to get a prototype made though so it can prove itself. Too bad they
don't see the value of the RV-10 market like some companies.

We looked at every place that it could be put and the only place that would not be in the way is right where the pictures show. I thought we could do it on the outer top corners, but that would really be in the way when not in use because the corners don’t go out as far as a car, so your view would be quite limited when not using the visor because it would hang down so far (when putting it far enough out that it wouldn’t be riding on your head). We got both of the Rosen standard mounts and neither of them worked anywhere, so we decided to make our own and it works very well. The main decision is whether to go with a 5x12 inch visor as shown, or a 10x12 inch one, which would provide more protection, but would also be more in the way. The visor can be put up against the cabin top when not in use while flying or when parked and if you have seatbelt and headset hangars like we have, then you can just align it with the bar and it is out of the way when parked.

Could anybody who has the bar as it comes from Van’s give me the dimensions between the holes so I can have the machine shop make them at those exact locations? This would help make a better fit for most people, although going to the final size, especially in steel, still wanders around a little bit, which shouldn’t be too big of a problem.

I saw a RV10 with Rosen mounts in the outer corners.........the mount bolts go thru the door channel. Visors swing to cover the windshield or rotate to cover the door windows. I did not care for more screws in the door channels BUT it is better than thru the cabin top or only having ONE visor.
Dean 40449
P.S. Anyone putting UHMV tape over the top of the cowl where the top cowl pins are to protect the paint when inserting the pins? Also considering putting it on the front of the cowl around the spinner hole to protect the paint when removing or putting the lower/upper cowl on. Hate to rub it against the spinner and scratch the paint ..........thinking that clear UHMV tape would help and not detract from the looks?

To take the cowl on and off, place a terry cloth rag between the cowl and the spinner.  It works well for me.

I saw a RV10 with Rosen mounts in the outer corners.........the mount bolts go thru the door channel. Visors swing to cover the windshield or rotate to cover the door windows. I did not care for more screws in the door channels BUT it is better than thru the cabin top or only having ONE visor.

P.S. Anyone putting UHMV tape over the top of the cowl where the top cowl pins are to protect the paint when inserting the pins? Also considering putting it on the front of the cowl around the spinner hole to protect the paint when removing or putting the lower/upper cowl on. Hate to rub it against the spinner and scratch the paint ...........thinking that clear UHMV tape would help and not detract from the looks?

If I or anybody else comes out with a way to mount it on the outside
corners, it would be easy to get another visor and put the first one and the
new one on the outside corners. The mount would then not be useable, but
the new mount would replace it anyway. We could have put it on the outside
corners with screws through the door channel, but the problem is that it
would be in the way quite a bit with no way to get it completely out of the
way so it didn't obstruct visibility.

Have you looked at a center mount that would allow 2 visors
to hang from it, one for each side?

That could be done without too much trouble, probably. I could talk to the
machinist and design a base. The single visor will cover both sides, just
not both at the same time, so whoever is flying can use it. How many would
be interested in this setup? I have 20 people now who want the visor, so
that gets into a half-decent price for the base. Doing a double base would
probably take the kit with two visors to about $350 or so.
