Although it is impervious to gasoline (I looked it up in chemistry
tables and performed experiments in the shop over 6 and 12 months), the
expanding foam does run away a bit when it expands. You can buy the
minimal expanding stuff, but it still expands.
I have abandoned the idea in favour of close-cell foam pipe insulation
(for 3/4" copper tubing - about 2" OD). This has a little bit of give
when installed, but most importantly, can be easily removed in case of a
tank leak. The spray foam sticks and would have to be chopped out.

I would advise not to use foam. The expansion continues when the foam is nearly solid. I am quite sure it would partially colapse the tank and bulge the wing skin.
I have used it in other applications and was suprised to see expansion hours later.
