Robin, I do not think it is over-simplification---(but, each to his own). I am a plans-builder and built my gear. Making the notches was "no big deal". But, one has to be careful as a proper fit is very critical------------- having built and installed my gear, I would definately go through the reversal if my plane handeled like some folks describe.

*And what of the composite gear on the European aircraft? Will it be
available to us? Is it the same gear offered by Aircraft Spruce?
Anything to save some weight!
BTW, on some Beech Bonanza series if I went up the step too quickly, the
tail would try to hit the ground.

I was told by the factory folk in Missouri that later this year (no date projected yet) the composite gear seen on the manufactured LSA "buy it and fly it" 601XLs will be either part of the kit or an option to buy. I was told that it will be possible to retrofit to an existing 601XL as well. For more exct info, email the nice folks at Zenith and get the info directly from those in charge.
